Poole Harbour

Poole Harbour

Poole Harbour is a fine place to enjoy an activity break, as the second largest natural harbour in the world, there are many water based activities to enjoy, from extreme sports such as kite surfing, wind surfing, water skiing, wake boarding, or simply pottering around on a paddle board or canoe. It is also a great area for cycling, be it a gentle peddle along the promenade, or a more energetic ride around the harbour which will take you through some spectacular scenery.

For those who want to spend the weekend or a few days on an activity break, there is a whole variety of accommodation available. For those wanting to live the opulent life style then Sandbanks is the place to stay, some of the worlds’ most expensive real estate can be found here. For the more adventurous there is always the option of roughing it under canvass in one of the many camp sites to be found in close proximity.

There are many places to walk, but for a walk with a difference then Brownsea Island is a must. It is easy enough to get to as ferries run frequently from both Poole Quay and Sandbanks peninsula. Brownsea Island is a truly magical place. One of the last bastions in England for the endangered red squirrel, I remember seeing one once, this is very rare as they are so timid, but the fleeting view of a busy little red tail bobbing through the foliage of nearby trees is a memory that will always stay with me. It is also famous for hosting the very first Scout camp, under the guidance of Sir Baden Powell back in 1906.
Poole quay is a lively location, with lots of eating places and pubs, where people can sit down and relax watching the world go by, and admire the many vessels that cruise by. Tuesday evening is always quite interesting as the quay is invaded by many hundreds of motorbikes, the bikers park up then wander around admiring other bikers bikes for a few hours before returning home. Apparently people come from considerable distances to enjoy this spectacular.
During July and August there are weekly firework displays that can be enjoyed from the quay as well as other many vantage points.

Fancy a spot of fishing, then Poole harbour is the place to be. You can fish from the banks of the harbour or from a boat drifting up and down the channels where lots of fish can be caught. It is also possible to hire a charter boat to go sea fishing.

There are so many things to do in and around Poole Harbour, and it brings a lot of happiness to many people. A place to be explored and enjoyed.
